Aaron: Hi guys, it’s Aaron Darko from MillionaireAt24.com and today I’m with Derek Johnson. He’s a 24-year-old CEO of Tatango.com, which is a group text messaging service, and he’s also CEO of DerekMedia.com, which is a social media agency. Derek: Yeah, hey, how are you doing buddy? Aaron: Cool man. So can you just tell us, what was your life like before you became an entrepreneur? What was your life like? Derek: Yeah, so, Tatango in a nutshell is a way to send 10 or 10,000 text messages to a group of people at the same time, whether that group is a church, an athletic team, a fraternity, a sorority, a university, …even organization like a non-profit can use Tatango. And businesses. We have a lot of businesses that use it as a marketing tool. And the idea…it was about two years ago, I was in university, University of Houston, and I was speaking to one of my friends, and she was in a sorority. One of the biggest problems that they had in that sorority was communicating with everybody at the same time in an efficient manner. So I kind of thought about it and I went onto Google and I looked for something that might solve this problem. I knew text messaging was the answer and I was looking for something to help her, and unfortunately – and fortunately – I couldn’t figure out or I couldn’t find anything that would allow someone like a sorority to text message all her members at the same time. So about 15 days later dropped out of school, started building the website, got a business plan, raised I think it was $15,000 in seed capital, and opened up a company. Aaron: Hi guys, Aaron Darko here from MillionaireAt24.com, and today I’m with Matt Mickiewicz. He’s the owner of SitePoint, Flippa, and 99designs. Now Matt, can you tell us a bit about yourself, and how you managed to start so many businesses? Matt: I’m 26 years old now, I actually got my starting business at age 14, so I was very, very young. I created a website called Webmaster-Resources.com, and the idea behind that site was basically I was going to build websites as a hobby, I was finding I had to do a great deal of research and a great deal of legwork to find all the tools and information and resources I needed. So I thought to myself, if I’m having all these problems learning everything I need, surely there’s thousands of people like me. So I basically created this website to compile all the information that I was learning and to share it with the rest of the world. Now, I was very fortunate that, 17 days after I launched my website, I got picked up by the LA Times, who heard about me, and then USA Today, Washington Times, Windows Magazine, all these other big media outlets started jumping on board and promoting me. A lot of good SEO traffic, good word of mouth, and business just really grew from there. Today we’ve renamed it and it’s called SitePoint.com. It’s one of the top 1000 websites on the internet, and it’s basically a giant online reserve site for people in the web design industry – we have email newsletters, and blogs, and forums, and we also do a lot of book publishing, so if you’re at a local Borders or Barnes and Nobles store you’ll probably see our orange and blue books about PHP, CSS, and stuff like that. Aaron: Okay. So, if someone wants to get a design done, they go to 99designs. What else could they find there? Like how can that help them? Matt: So 99Designs is the largest crowd-sourcing marketplace for graphic design. Before us, if you needed graphic design done, you either went on Elance and requested bids, you hired a friend or family member, or you just tried to do it yourself. With 99designs we basically turned them all upside down on its head. So, what happens is, say you need a logo. You come to 99designs, describe your needs (for example, ‘I want a yellow and blue logo that’s very Web 2.0’), you set a budget, for example $300, then a timeline, which is usually a week. Then designers from all over the world see your project, see your description, and they compete for your $300 by uploading fully complete concept designs – so you’re not getting bids back, you’re getting back actual work. After a week’s time, you’ll on average get 100 different designs to choose from. You pick one, and that designer gets paid out from the budget through us. Aaron: I see. So entrepreneurs out there who are trying to solve problems but they don’t know how to do it – what advice would you give them? Because your site obviously solves a big problem in the marketplace. Aaron: Hi guys and girls, it's Aaron Darko here and today I'm here with Coach Deb. She's one of the speakers here at Mark Anastasi's Social Media Millionaire Summit, and she actually moved from New Jersey to the island of Oahu to build her multi-million dollar social media empire.  Debbie, it’s really nice having you. Deb: Thank you, it’s great to be here. Aaron: So, can you tell us a bit about your story and what you’re about? Deb: Yeah, I decided to change my life, quit my job, sell everything, I literally sold my furniture in the house…  just everything to move to move across the country, all the way across the Pacific to an island. Just to really see what you could do if you’re on an island and you couldn’t necessarily go from state to state, from country to country without getting on a plane. So, what could I do just using new media marketing and do it on a shoe-string budget like a startup company and how much impact and how could I reach the UK from this tiny little island. And that’s pretty much what the quest was and that’s how I became known as a Social Media Queen and Twitter Queen, I wrote the first book on Twitter, I wrote the first book on new media and part of that was just being online, observing what’s happening, observing the trends and being a participant. I wasn’t just talking about it, I was using it, because that was my access to the outside world. You know, I’m here on an island and you have a certain amount of people that you can talk to but it’s limited. Especially if you’re talking about meeting other business owners and other entrepreneurs. So, I got that quest, I got on that quest and I got that need fulfilled by the whole internet aspect of social media. Aaron: So, how important it is for people to get online and actually get involved in these social media conversations as opposed to traditional markets? Deb: It’s extremely important if people want to get to be top of mind, and be known in this 21st century. 2010 is going to be a very different year than it was when websites first came out back in the ‘90s. And, "If they’re not involved with social media, they will be behind the curve." Just like if they didn’t have a website and they thought it was gonna be a fad. And they see: “Oh, now, blogs aren’t a fad either”. They’ve only grown and they’re now in the billions. There’s billions of blogs out there but at the time when they first came out people were like: “Oh blogs, that’s just a cute name…” and they thought they could ignore it but that was to their peril. "It’s the fast; in this economy it’s the fast that eat the slow." It’s no longer the big that eat the small, right? It’s the fast that eat the slow. So, I wasn’t a big company when I moved to Oahu, we didn’t have corporate backing it was all self funded. But, I was faster than my competitors and that’s what differentiated myself, and that what has put me on a bleeding edge of this type of technology that I’m now a ‘go to’ person in this area because I’ve put myself out there and I did it first. "So, if they’re not going out there in social media they’re gonna lose business, they’re gonna have to pay a lot for advertising instead of getting it for free. Neil Patel is a self-proclaimed computer geek who has a knack for numbers and analysing things. His companies generate a ton of money and he has a big goal of building a company thats worth more than $100 million. I know he will do it because he is so focused. I have known about this huge point for a long time - Neil Patel brought it up again in the interview: You take your 5 closest friends, you add up their income and you divide it by 5 (so pretty much you’re taking the average) and that’s gonna be the average worth of your income. Aaron: Hi guys and girls, this is Aaron Darko from Millionaireat24.com and today we have a very very special guest. His name is Neil Patel and he is a co-founder of two internet companies, Crazyegg and Kissmetricks. And he's got a personal blog which is at quicksprout.com and through these two companies he's helped large corporations such as AOL, General Motors, Hewlett-Packard and Wiacom make more money from the web. By the age of 21, not only was Neil named top 100 blogger by technorati, he was also one of the top influences on the web according to Wall Street Journal. Neil are you there you with us? Neil: Yes, I’m here, thank you for having me. Aaron: No worries. Now, I’ve actually met you back in March didn’t I, On Yanik Silver’s Underground seminar? Neil: Yep! Yes and we even had, I think, a drink together or so? Aaron: Yeah, it was pretty cool, pretty cool. So, how are you doing? Neil: I’m doing good. Aaron: Cool man, so let’s get straight into it. So, tell us a bit about yourself, and what you’re about and your story, if you would please? Neil: Sure, so, I’m just a 25 year old entrepreneur. I started in the whole business when I was around 16 and since then I’ve been doing a lot of .com stuff. So, whether it’s a consultant company or analytics company and there’s a lot of other fail startups in between. And, yeah, I’m just an internet guy and a computer geek that loves doing stuff that’s online. Aaron: Sweet, so could dive into bit more about what, how your school days were and what you used to do for money when you were at school? Neil: Sure, so when I was… still, two things, so, in high school I used to do things like: sell pirated black-boxes, hack satellite cards so that way people could get adult content on their TV or, specially, the kids could… Aaron: [Laughs] Neil: (…) I could burn CDs and DVDs so people could get movies before they came out, that way they didn’t have to pay 10 – 15 dollars for music CD and I would do it for, like, dollar, two dollars… And while I was at college, I had an internet marketing consulting company that I cofounded with my business partner. What we used to do is just help out other companies get rankings on Google, right? Like the General Motors of the World and the HP’s so that way when you typed in “cars”, General Motors would show first at the top. Aaron: Wow, that’s smart. So, when you were in college, what caused you start your own company with your business partner? Neil: What caused me to? Aaron: Yeah. Neil: So, I actually started that when I was in high school and then I just carried that company on into college.
